ARCSI Wall of Fame

One of the things we did when we moved to our new office was to create an ARCSI “Wall of Fame” (see picture below). As I stood back and looked at those 29 pictures of Past Presidents, Past Professional Cleaners of the Year, and Past Presidents Award winners I was humbled by what was on the wall. What an unbelievable amount of talent, leadership, dedication, commitment and engagement those pictures represent.

I am not going to name them all here, but you can download a pdf that lists them all. I have had the privilege of serving as your Executive Director since 2009. In my job I get a new boss every year or two. I had the pleasure to work with six presidents, one of them twice, and the current Residential Council Chairperson RJ Patel. I have also had the pleasure of getting to know and work with the three past presidents who served before I arrived. These ten people all have very different personalities, very different skill sets, and different visions for the future. They have three very important things in common. First, with one exception, they all still own and run a residential cleaning company. Two, with no exceptions, they have a great passion for and still work very hard for the success of your association. Three, from my perspective, they all did a great job for you. They are all my eyes and ears for member feedback and concerns. They have made some tough decisions over the years, but they always made them with what they believed was in the best interest of the association.

The longest line of pictures is our Wall of Fame is the Professional Cleaner of the Year group. The award was first presented in 2006, and the twelve award recipients were truly exceptional professional cleaners and representatives of their companies when the award was presented. Although some of them are no longer with the industry, I am quite sure they are truly exceptional individuals to this day.

Finally, a most interesting group is our former Presidents Award, now Chairman’s Award winners. This award was started in 2011 to recognize those key “non-cleaning” staff people who are essential to success in any company. They do everything from training, to HR, to customer service and sales, to accounting and payroll, and a lot of things that are probably not in their written job description. They are the “whatever it takes” group. Interestingly, I am aware of two of them who now have ownership in their companies.

All 29 have something in common. I desire to see the level of professionalism in our industry continue to improve. There is a very wide range of ages, experience, and expertise, but they are all cleaning industry professionals, who are engaged with their trade association and want it to improve. Our 2018 awards applications will be out sometime in May and I am looking forward to adding your professional cleaner or key “in-house” person to our Wall of Fame.

Hope to see you in Tucson at our Leadership Summit and most certainly in Dallas this fall.

Sincerely, Ernie Hartong

Opportunity Luck-How Luck and Habits Affect Your Success
Moderator: Sharon Tinberg, Rags to Riches
April 17, 2018

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be luckier than others? You'd swear if they fell in a vat of manure they would come out smelling like a rose. There actually might be some truth to that. Experts tell us that luck affects success by 87%. That's a mighty high statistic and almost doesn't make it seem worth the effort to try hard on your own to be successful. If you're just not a lucky person what good will all that hard work do?

Again, experts tell us a large portion of the 87% of luck is called Opportunity Luck, luck that is created when people do the same good things day in and day out year after year. In other words good habits create opportunity luck and ultimately success.
Likewise bad habits create Detrimental Luck at the same 87% rate. Like good luck, many people feel they are just doomed with bad luck. Sharon submits it is their bad habits day after day and year after year that has ultimately resulted in their detrimental luck.

Sharon will discuss habits and the impact she has seen good and bad habits have on the success and failure of cleaners, managers and owners in the offices that she has visited in the past 2 1/2 years. She will also share some simple habits that are easy to adapt which most offices are not utilizing. Perhaps a few simple habit changes could have a huge impact on your company's success in 2018.

It’s HCT Season at ARCSI

The HCT Certification differentiates you from other residential cleaning companies in your market as professional and knowledgeable. Make a commitment now to get your HCT in 2018.

The House Cleaning Technician (HCT) certification program teaches cleaning technicians how to go about doing just that. Becoming certified gives you the knowledge to be the best cleaner possible. Certified House Cleaning Techs understand all the surfaces they will find in clients' homes, how to clean them and (almost more importantly) how NOT to clean them.

This year we have ample opportunity to get you and your team the HCT Certification.

Offered by the IICRC accredited school, the Institute for Service Excellence, the course is taught by Bruce Vance, ISE.

If You're Happy, You're Probably Really Smart.
Science Says So

By Jeff Haden

That whole thing about being too intelligent to be happy? Research shows it's totally wrong.

Hang around the right (or maybe wrong) people long enough and sooner or later someone will claim that it's easier to be happy when you aren't particularly smart. (Obviously the people saying so feel like they are particularly smart.)

Why do they think that?

Possibly because the more intelligent you are the higher your standards, so the less likely you are to be satisfied. Or because the more intelligent you are, the tougher your search for meaning and purpose. Or because the more intelligent you are, the more likely you are to be tormented by some of the big pictures like politics, the environment, or world peace.

While they might have high standards and big picture concerns, research shows that people with high IQs are actually more likely to be happy; data from the research showed that people with the highest IQs were much happier than those with the lowest IQs.

ISSA, Trade Press to Debut Clean Buildings Expo in March 2019

ISSA and Trade Press Media Group announced a new trade show for the commercial cleaning industry — Clean Buildings ExpoSM (CBE). This joint venture will make its debut at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD, March 26-27, 2019.

Designed for end-users of cleaning products and equipment, CBE fills an immediate need for education and product information in the building-rich Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. Show organizers anticipate approximately 1,200 key decision-makers from health care, education, government, and hospitality facilities, as well as building service contractors, to attend the two-day event. CBE will be co-located with the annual National Facilities Management & Technology (NFMT) Show Baltimore.

“ISSA's strong relationship with cleaning equipment and technology suppliers and the success of our annual North America and other worldwide trade shows will encourage a wide variety of exhibitors to participate in this exciting new expo,” says ISSA Executive Director John Barrett. “Exhibiting companies will include manufacturers, leading industry suppliers of floor and carpet cleaning equipment, chemicals, restroom supplies, and green cleaning products as well as leading providers of cleaning and facility-maintenance services. CBE promises to be a very synergistic event.”
