I Want to Hear from Each and Every Member of ARCSI

As you read this, we are knee deep in our preparations for the annual planning retreat for the ISSA Residential Cleaning Council. What is most important to our planning and discussions is that the Council represents YOUR interests, the members of ARCSI, A Division of ISSA.


At the retreat, I want to be armed more knowledge than ever before. That's where you come in. The Council is YOUR voice and we need YOUR input as we chart the direction for ARCSI, A Division of ISSA for 2018 and beyond.


If you could take a few minutes to send me an email, I would like to hear from you. Please answer any or all of these questions that are of particular interest to the council:

  • What are we doing well?
  • What do we not do very well?
  • What would you like to see us doing that we are not?
  • How is our "customer service?"
  • What are your expectations from ARCSI?
  • Why do you belong to ARCSI?
  • Where do you derive the most value from ARCSI? 

This isn't a survey. There are no right or wrong answers. I simply want to hear from you - to know how you feel about ARCSI and that we are representing your interests to the best of our abilities.

It's Time to Ride the Video Wave


If you haven't incorporated video onto your website and social media platforms, it's about time you did, according to Marcus Sheridan, president of The Sales Lion and a speaker at the upcoming Leadership Summit.


"Video is a wave that is on its way up. You want to catch this wave on its way up," Sheridan said.


Marcus suggested five quick and easy ways you can get started using video:

  1. 80% Video. Make videos that answer 80% of the questions you get asked from potential clients.
  2. Bio Videos. Use one-minute bio videos to introduce any member of your staff team - in particular your sales team. These should definitely be included in your email signatures.
  3. Product & Service Videos. Make a video that details each service your provide and product you sell.
  4. "Claims" Videos. Make a video to backup any claim that you make about yourself and your company. Consider the claims you make about yourself, how many have you shown or proven visually to your customers?
  5. Social Proof Videos. Make your customer testimonials into videos.

Video can be daunting but, as Sheridan said on Hot Topic Tuesday, it doesn't have to be expensive. You have several options to produce video:

  • Learn how to produce video. Can but time consuming but is very cost effective.
  • Outsource it. This option can be very expensive.
  • Hire an in-house videographer. It's best to have someone in your office that "owns" producing videos. If someone doesn't own it, it doesn't get done.

"How much is it to hire a videographer part-time?," Sheridan asked. "It can be a lot of money but the fruit is well worth it."

I might be dying, I thought, as I wakened from my influenza-fueled grogginess and heard the ding of my phone going off. The little knot of anxiety that I always get when I hear my text messages going off early in the morning hit my gut less hard than usual. I simply didn't have the energy today - I was way too sick to fret. With an effort I rolled over to see who was disturbing me, fingers crossed that it was my sister-in-law on the East Coast who had forgotten the time and just wanted to say hello.





New Oregon Law Requires Cleaning Service Providers to be Licensed


Effective January 1, 2018, Oregon amended its labor contracting law to require those organizations that employ workers for the purpose of providing janitorial or cleaning services to other parties (i.e., building service contractors, residential cleaning service providers) to:

  • Be licensed as a Property Services Contractor by the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BLI);
    • Provide professional training through or approved by BLI to managers, supervisors and employees on:
    • Sexual assault and sexual harassment in the workplace
    • Prevention of workplace discrimination
  • "Whistleblower" protection afforded to those employees who report a violation of state or federal law by the employer
  • Pass a qualifying test designed to test applicant's ability, knowledge, and proficiency to conduct business as a labor contractor, including a test of knowledge regarding the employer's responsibility to prevent sexual assault or sexual harassment
  • In addition to Oregon labor contracting law, Property Services Contractor must also understand and comply with state, federal wage and hour and civil rights regulations.

Compliance Assistance. 

Oregon BLI has put together detailed compliance assistance in the form of a "handbook for property services contractors" that provides guidance on the:

  • Scope of coverage including FAQs on what entities are subject to the new law (as well as those that are NOT subject to the new requirements);
  • Detailed description of the license application process; and
  • Summary of select wage and hour and civil rights laws

ISSA Foundation Provides New Opportunities for ARCSI Members


The ISSA Foundation is the philanthropic arm of ISSA, helping the cleaning industry attract and retain employees by connecting ISSA member firms with college students. The Foundation also promotes the well-being of the general public in several ways.


The mission of the ISSA Foundation is to raise and provide funds for scholarships, research grants, and other programs that promote the welfare of the general public as it relates to the sanitation, cleaning, and maintenance industry.


This mission is accomplished through generous donations from individuals and companies, most of whom are ISSA members. Contributions to the Foundation support the annual scholarship program and are tax-deductible. Members can easily make a donation to the ISSA Foundation when they renew their annual memberships. In 2018, residential members are eligible for ISSA Scholarships. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2018.

Cleanify Profiles: Pam Washington and Schera Moses


Pam Washington, Fast Friendly Spotless Maid Service


When people think of Las Vegas, one of the last things that comes to mind is dust. When I spoke to Pam Washington, owner of Fast Friendly Spotless Maid Service, she joked about the situation. "Las Vegas is so dusty! I have job security forever. It's really windy and dry, meaning that dust is always a problem. It is the dustiest city in the world."


Pam has been in the cleaning industry for 24 years and runs a successful coaching business to help other cleaning company owners in addition to managing her own maid service. Prior to becoming a cleaning entrepreneur, she ran her own catering company. She had been working as a stockbroker when she had a major aha! moment that allowed her to make the switch to being self-employed.



Schera Moses, Final Touch Housekeepers


Picture this: three cleaning ladies perched on top of a kitchen table using a canoe paddle to shoo the client's enormous Great Danes out the door. Schera Moses has seen it all in over 20 years of working in the house cleaning industry, including this scene. The client had a canoe on the wall, and one of Schera's crew grabbed a paddle to try and force the dogs back out the door they had mistakenly opened. "They looked like horses. The girls jumped on top of the table because the dogs were so big. When she starting shooing him with the paddle, the dog turned to look at her, like, 'Really? A canoe paddle?' It was so funny."


I just had a knack for it-it was really weird but cleaning came naturally to me.
Previously working as a bartender, Schera got into cleaning as a way to support herself and have better hours to manage raising her sons. "I just had a knack for it-it was really weird but cleaning came naturally to me."
