Hiring the Productive and Legal Way

Hiring remains a critical concern for the cleaning industry – not just who to hire but where do you find applicants. Wendy Christie, from EmployerESource.com, joined Hot Topic Tuesday to talk about another aspect of hiring that you cannot forget about – hiring the legal way.

 

“Anything you are doing in regard to hiring, should focus on the business,” Christie warned. “When hiring, you cannot discriminate on any of the following criteria:

  • Sex,
  • Age,
  • Race,
  • National origin,
  • Religion,
  • Physical disability,
  • Veteran status, and
  • State specific – smoking, cross dressing, transgender.”

In today’s world, it is safe to say that hiring can be a legal minefield. It is imperative to be proactive and know the legal risks you are facing.

Christie warned attendees to be cognizant of discussion topics even when engaging in small talk.

 

“One of the things you have to be careful of is not asking questions that delves into those protected areas,” Christie said. “Even if the applicant brings up a topic that is in a protected category, you should avoid the topic. It would be best to change the subject.”
