I am Very Puzzled

Next week we will launch our 2013 Awards, including our Professional Cleaner of the Year, Presidents' Award sponsored by Moddy Insurance Worldwide,New Cleaning Business of the Year presented by Rags to Richesand our eight Image Awards. This will be my fifth convention since becoming your Executive Director, and I have been extremely puzzled for the last four years. Puzzled by the lack of entries for our awards. It's like our great members are reluctant to recognize their great employees. They are reluctant to talk about their great website, unique logo, classy uniforms or sparkling vehicle wrap.

It puzzles me because the one thing that is consistent about our members is their willingness to share information and advice with other members. It puzzles me because each day I try and make time to visit members' websites or read their newsletters.

There is a lot of great stuff out there. Very creative, very informative, very professional, top notch customer service ideas, employee incentives and much more. I enjoy reading your customer comments about something special one of your cleaners has done for a customer.

So go ahead, don't by shy, submit an application for one or more of our awards. It is up to you. Others are not going to nominate your great office manager for the Presidents' award or your logo or vehicle wrap for an Image award. You have to do it. Past winners have told us that something as simple as winning the "Best Logo" award has a very positive impact on employee morale. It makes them proud they are working for a company that is an award winning professional organization. So flood our awards committee with your applications. They are available online at www.arcsi.orgor www.cleaningconvention.org Good Luck!

On a personal note this week, Happy Fathers' Day to all of you Dads out there. I have had no greater honor in my life than that of being a Dad. Sometimes it is a tough job, but nothing has brought me more joy.Have a relaxing Fathers Day, Dads.

Industry and Business News
Healthcare Plans Delayed for Small Businesses
On May 31, the Department of Health and Human Services issued its final ruling on employee choices for the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP), stating that "We have serious concerns that issuers would not be operationally ready to offer [health plans] through the SHOP if we implemented employee choice for 2014."

This means that for small businesses in the 33 states where the HHS has a hand in running the exchanges, employees will not have a choice as to which plan to choose, but rather their employers will pick one plan for all employees. In the 17 state-run marketplaces and the District of Columbia, governments are free to move ahead with an employee choice model.

Immigration Reform: Momentum Gathering
While many agree that some sort of immigration reform is necessary, getting all parties to agree on how it should look is proving to be a challenge. The Senate's "Gang of Eight" proposal passed a cloture vote on Tuesday, entering what is sure to be months of debate on the bill's details.

One item concerning small businesses in particular is the the E-Verify system. Designed to tell prospective employers whether job applicants have legal status, the E-verify system, along with regulatory limits for low-skilled workers, would unfairly favor larger businesses and place "significant new costs, bureaucracy, and regulations on small employers," says the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

Past President Sardone Speaks Up for ARCSI Education
Debbie Sardone NEW In a recent issue of her Cleaning For A Reason newsletter, ARCSI Past President Debbie Sardone wrote a fantastic column, explaining how ARCSI education turned her business around. "It wasn't the economy, or working harder; it was knowledge and inspiration," says Sardone. "General business training is no match for industry-specific training," she continues. "When you surround yourself with successful people from your own industry, you will find solutions."

Now that Sardone is one of those successful people, she can be found every year at the ARCSI Cleaning Convention, giving back to those who were in her shoes years ago. This year her Clean Team Catalog will once again sponsor a day of the ARCSI Member Lounge. Stop by November 17 - 21 and pick her brain, she's happy to help!
Maid Bright Participates in Nonprofit Event
Many ARCSI members and cleaning business owners give generously of their time, talents and profits when it comes to causes close to their hearts. Such was the case for Yusuf Mehmetoglu when he heard about the Reston, VA "Love Your Body" event, benefiting Reston Interfaith, a local charity organization.

"We wanted to participate in this event to give back and to be a part of our community," said Mehmetoglu. "The Reston Chamber of Commerce invited us to the event because we provide environmentally friendly cleaning services and I am glad we participated."

During the event, Mehmetoglu reports his tent had many visitors and he took the opportunity to promote his company's involvement with Cleaning for a Reason.

Mehmetoglu also reports brisk gift card sales at the event. He is donating $1000 from the sale of gift cards at the event to Reston Interfaith.
How Much is Your Smoking Staff Costing You?
Smokers cost employers a lot of money--$5,816 a year compared to someone who has never smoked, to be exact. The number comes from new research that tallies the cost of smoke breaks (the biggest expense, at $3,077), additional health care ($2,056), absenteeism ($517), and lower productivity ($462), says Fast Company.

While some companies are discriminating against smokers by not hiring them at all, 29 states have laws in place to protect smokers' rights. Others combat the financial drain by trying to do everything in their power to get their smoking employees to kick the habit.
Marketing to Millennials: How to Catch the Eye of the Distracted
While many residential cleaning businesses are dealing with Millennials (those born in the early 1980's to the early 2000s) in the workplace, they are even more elusive as consumers. Inc. online features a short, yet fascinating, article on what makes this generation tick in the midst of constant media bombardment.
  • Millennials are distracted. They change devices 29 times in one hour. Your message needs to be cross-platform, everywhere they are. If the old adage is that a consumer needs to see something seven times before it registers, multiply that at least twice for Millennials.
  • They are cautious. Being raised in the media age, they perceive much of what they read as propaganda. To catch their interest, engage them in earnest, meaningful way about things they care about.
