Today is the official start of "Convention Season" here at ARCSI. Nov 17-21 will be here before we know it. Angela Wilson of Solano Maids and her convention committee are hard at work putting together a fabulous program for Las Vegas. The great job Lanette Richmond and her committee did the last time we were in Vegas will be a tough act to follow, but Angela and her committee are up to the challenge.

Convention committee, Member Outreach, Hot Topic Tuesday moderators, and more, our members volunteer literally hundreds of hours each year to help make ARCSI a growing and successful organization.

Our committees reflect the profile of our membership as well. It is not just the large companies who drive our committees. Committees are comprised of large and small, old and new, owners and staff. They give of their time and their talents to help ARCSI provide programs and benefits in response to what our members tell us they would like to have. Sometimes that is three or four hours a month, sometimes it is ten or fifteen minutes a month.

The point here is, we know you all have businesses to run, so whatever you can do to help ARCSI is great. When I read our member profiles I am always amazed at the talents and backgrounds of our members. You are a terrific group of very talented folks and we appreciate what you do for ARCSI. We don't say that to you enough.

While it is easy for us to track the formal things committees do, one of the real benefits of ARCSI membership is the connections you make. Everyday ARCSI members are taking time to reach out and help each other. Many of you do this through social media with all of the active Facebook groups that are popping up. Some of you through our Linked In discussion boards or the discussion boards on our website.

Many of you also take the time from your busy day ofrunning your business to host other ARCSI members at your company for a day or two to help them with their operations. Those kinds of connections and sharing of information and the friendships that develop are what really drives ARCSI and are what makes membership priceless. Just ask Sarah Hodge who spent the day with Rosemary Stader of Elite Home Cleaning recently. The invitation came from a conversation they had in Dallas at the Extreme Business Makeover. (Another reason to attend the ARCSI Convention, live conversations are always better than Facebook).

It was good to see Peter Chakonas of Pride Klean this week, he made his annual stop at the ARCSI office on his way back from a visit to Indiana and Cincinnati. Take note, if your travels bring you anywhere close to Columbus, let us know, we would love to see you.

The 10th Annual ARCSI Cleaning Convention will take place in Las Vegas, November 17 - 21, 2013. Bringing together industry leaders, new products and services, top-notch education and opportunities for members to network, the ARCSI Cleaning Convention is the highlight of the ARCSI year. Keynote speakers at the this year's event will include Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos.com; magician David Blaine and former Blue Angels pilot John Foley.

Morning education sessions and the ISSA trade show, Interclean, will be held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Bally's will once again serve as the ARCSI Headquarters Hotel while in Vegas, with afternoon and evening events taking place within the hotel. Bally's is offering ARCSI Cleaning Convention registrants a $69/night room rate for a North Tower room.

ISSA Launches New Online Green Product Registry

Transpare™, the free online purchasing resource from ISSA and its partner Ecoform, is now live at www.transpare.com. Already it is receiving excellent reviews from product buyers who are looking for an easy way to identify, compare, and select environmentally friendly cleaning products.

The online registry lists the environmental, health, and safety attributes of products, helping purchasers meet their sustainability goals. This easy-to-use resource uses uniform metrics, which can be sorted according to those criteria most important to the customer, while helping combat potential "greenwashing."

Transpare allows suppliers to demonstrate the environmental profile of their products as well as their commitment to innovation and sustainable solutions.

"Transpare clearly represents the next generation of ecolabeling for the commercial cleaning industry that will help take green cleaning and sustainability to the next level," says Stephen P. Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group, LLC.

The tool was developed using a consensus-based process driven by the priorities of purchasers representing key market sectors, including health care, education, and government, plus environmental organizations and traditional ecolabel organizations. Experts involved in the development include the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Design for the Environment, Green Seal, EcoLogo, State of Illinois, State of California, and Walmart.

The program is ISSA and Ecoform's answer to an increased demand for what is called "radical transparency." Transpare provides easy-to-use data that can help manufacturers and distributors better explain the differences between products as well as-for the first time-demonstrate why their products meet or exceed the criteria of traditional ecolabels.

How It Works

The Transpare registry provides clear and easy-to-understand explanations for each reported metric of a product's environmental attributes and their impact on product users and building occupants.

Transpare users can customize product searches by using filters based upon:

· VOC content

· Concentrates delivered in closed-loop systems

· Skin sensitization

· Acute toxicity

· Biodegradability

· The absence of fragrances and dyes.

Transpare helps users identify products that meet the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Environmental & Energy Design for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (LEED-EBOM) green building rating system and helps ensure compliance with ISSA's Cleaning Industry Management Standard for Green Buildings (CIMS-GB).

Informed Purchasers

Individuals who agree to use Transpare when evaluating cleaning products can become Informed Purchasers and utilize the"Informed Purchaser" logo. They will be listed at www.transpare.com as a forward-thinking organization committed to providing environmentally friendly, safe, and healthy solutions to meet occupant cleaning needs.

CompassWave_LogoCompass Wave is seeking a sales representative for the residential cleaning industry to introduce the Compass Wave online estimating tool to cleaning companies. The position will be commission based.

Several ARCSI members are currently using this tool, and Compass Wave is seekingsomeone with residential cleaning experience who can present and demonstrate the product to both existingcompanies and new start ups. NLRB Lacks Authority to Requite Union Poster Display
The United States Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., ruled in favor of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in its challenge to the National Labor Relations Board's (NLRB) "Notice Posting Rule." Reversing the decision of the district court, the circuit court found that the Board does not possess the authority to require that the posters be displayed in places of business. Further, it affirmed the district court's determination that the Board lacks the legal authority to enforce the poster rule as an unfair labor practice.

"Today's decision is a monumental victory for small-business owners across this country who have been subject to the illegal actions of a labor board that has consistently failed to act as a neutral arbiter, as the law contemplates," said Karen Harned, executive director of NFIB's Small Business Legal Center. "The court acknowledged that 'the choice to speak includes within it the choice of what not to say,' and that the NLRB overstepped its authority by compelling small-business owners to post a pro-union notice. The court's ruling protects small-business owners from frivolous union lawsuits and reaffirms that the authority of the NLRB is narrow and limited as defined by Congress in the National Labor Relations Act."
Harmony Clean Leverages Anniversary, Earth Day for Marketing
Getting free marketing for your cleaning business is easy, if you get it some time and effort. Former Dallas newscaster Jeff Crilley spoke last month at the Extreme Business Makeover about how to get local reporters interested in your business. Deni Sarandrea and Vicki Brown of Harmony Clean in Doylestown, PA have mastered the art of working with the local press to get all sorts of coverage for their business.

Leveraging Harmony Clean's 10th anniversary, coming up this June, was one way the pair scored a huge article in their local paper. The article, which ran in January in the Bucks County Herald, detailed the start of the company and its growth, but gave Brown and Sarandrea a place to talk about their philosophy, their belief in green cleaning and their involvement in their community.

As promoters of a "green" life, Brown and Sarandrea also sponsored an Earth Day Fair in their community, kicking off a promotion offering a free year of house cleaning along with other local prizes from businesses in and around Doylestown. The pair tied this to their 10th anniversary and their brand by starting the contest on Earth Day and choosing winners on the day of their anniversary. Partnering with other local businesses for gift cards and other giveaways gave those merchants exposure, while beefing up Harmony Clean's prize package. To see the Facebook contest, click here.

The New Rules for Marketing
cheap marketing If you're still marketing with tactics that worked five or 10 years ago, you might as well be in the Dark Ages, says a recent Inc.com article. Inc. reports that what works today is basically the opposite of what worked in the past.
  1. Where the old rules were "broadcast" and used various forms of mass media, the new rules are "narrowcast" and use highly targeted media.
  2. Where the old rules were all about reaching the masses, the new rules are all about reaching small groups of individuals.
  3. Where the old rules left you in control of your brand and destiny, the new rules puts that control in the hands of your customers.

How to Make Your Business "Pinteresting"

Pinterest, the latest social media darling, can be addictive, but many ARCSI members has said "I love Pinterest for personal use, how can I translate that to my business?" In her book The Ultimate Guide to Pinterest for Business, Karen Leland provides a Pinterest road map to help drive sales and generate interest. Here are her top pick for boards for your business.

1. Topics that interest to your target audience
Think about boards that would speak to the obvious themes, subjects, areas of interest, and issues that are important to your clients and potential clients.

2. Educational value
Boards based on "how to" information do very well on Pinterest. If you have access to content (video or print) that can educate, inform, teach or transfer knowledge to your audience, create some boards around it. The nice thing is, as long as the information relates to your business, it doesn't even have to be your original content, as long as you properly credit it.

3. Feedback for your business
Thinking about launching a new service or product? Want to know what your customers like or don't like about your offers or delivery? Try a virtual focus group by creating a Pinterest board that allows you to test what your target market thinks.

4. New products or services
In the same way that you can create buzz for events, you can rev up your audience's anticipation of a new product or service launch by dedicating a board to it. Pin information about the features and benefits, suggested audiences and uses, and special deals, testimonials, etc. After the release, you can post customers' comments, media reviews and photos of clients using the product or service.

5. Showcase your company culture and employees
Generate greater customer engagement by giving your clients an inside peek at your business through a board or boards that offers a feel for your company's style, ideas, projects and commitments. You can also feature photos of your office and employees or even your customers -- all with their permission, of course.


6. Provide social proof
According to Wikipedia, social proof is "a psychological phenomenon where people assume the actions of others in an attempt to reflect correct behavior for a given situation." In other words, if it worked for the Joneses, it should work for me. There are several flavors of boards you can create that will help create social proof.

  • Feature your customers using your brand. Create a board that shows how current customers are using, interacting with and integrating your product or service into their businesses. One way to do this is to ask people to send you photos of them engaging with your brand.

Looking to compare your residential cleaning business to others your size? ARCSI can help!

ARCSI completed its first-ever benchmarking survey in January and the results are finally in. The 2013 ARCSI Benchmarking Report was debuted at the Extreme Business Makeover in April and is now available for download for free to ARCSI members. The report is available to nonmembers as well, for a cost of $100.

The survey and resulting report cover issues like the amount of annual budget spent on labor, marketing and supplies; annual turnover rates, how employees are paid and what benefits are offered. ARCSI found that the majority of the respondents are cleaning bi-weekly clients and that those cleaners are overwhelmingly treated as employees (93%) instead of independent contractors (7%).

ARCSI is looking for Board of Directors Position Description

Being a member of the ARCSI Board of Directors (BOD) is a large and fulfilling commitment. You will be a high profile representative of the residential cleaning industry. As a Board member you will have a great privilege and opportunity to take what you learn and apply it in your own business. Those who have are realizing rewarding benefits. To take advantage of these opportunities, you must be willing and able to meet all of the requirements below. Board terms are three (3) years.

  1. You must be a member in good standing with all dues and fees up to date.
  2. You must have been a member of ARCSI for at least two (2) years at the time of the Annual Meeting in the year of the election.
  3. You must have attended at least one (1) Annual Convention and one (1) Executive Leadership Conference (national event) in the past two (2) years.
  4. You will be expected to attend at least one (1) teleconference Board meeting each month. The calls last between one and two hours. There are occasional special meetings.
  5. You will be required to attend the annual convention as well as the Executive Leadership Conference in their entirety.
  6. You will be required to attend a three day Board meeting for strategic planning. (usually in January of each year,)
  7. You will be expected to serve on at least one committee and potentially be expected to chair a committee.
  8. You will be expected to fully participate in all events by helping with planning, hosting events, speaking, or keeping a high profile among the members to be sure everyone is feeling included. You may be asked to help set up or tear down event materials.
  9. You may be expected to host an ARCSI luncheon(s) or meeting(s) in your area.
  10. If elected to the Board you will be required to attend the New Board Member Orientation at the 2013 Convention.

Candidate must be willing to commit personal resources for travel and participation in Board and Association functions. All expenses incurred for these trips are your responsibility.

  • You can expect expenses to run between $3000 and $5000 per year.
  • You can expect to spend 5-15 hours per month on ARCSI activities.
